Zorya, the Red Thread
She was taken in winter, from a village east of a border no one remembers. The vampire Christoff kept her in his collection—what he called vintage—feeding slowly, savouring the heldness in her that others lacked. She escaped by patience and violence: worked the cuff until her hand came free, killed the servant with his own chain, walked into dawn with blistered skin and iron in her mouth. The Watch found her. The Belarusian herbalist—the one they called Baba Yaga—claimed her before the change could complete. In a cottage at the edge of the village, with a nail blackened in other fires and herbs older than the town, the witch cast a binding that could not stop what Zorya was becoming, only redirect it. The transformation broke against the spell like a wave against a seawall. What remained was neither vampire nor witch but something between: a Wraithwitch. She looks human—has to, for the work she does—but after sunset she can become shadow, slip between worlds, and pull others into that dark with her. The red thread of the binding is her weapon, stitching mouths shut before glamour can take hold. She retained her mind. When the snow melted, Karaléŭna packed her basket and they walked to France together—two women crossing borders that existed and borders that didn't. To fund the journey, Zorya did what survivors do: she sold what men would buy, and when vampires came hunting easy prey, she let them get close enough for the thread to reach. She eradicated them one by one, using herself as bait, walking like a trap dressed for the taking. By the time the Lodge found them—or they found it—she had learned that vengeance and survival could wear the same dress. She walks in daylight, though it stings. She feeds, though rarely. She helps the weak. She waits for the vile. She smiles once—just once—then vanishes a mile.
