The Wildwood Witches: 3 - Craftwitch (Power Level 5)

Vashti, the Bitter Vintner

In the spice markets of Isfahan, where saffron stained the air gold and pomegranate juice ran in the gutters like diluted wine, Vashti learned to brew before she learned to read. Her grandmother — a Grove herbalist who had walked from the Caucasus with a hundred dried plants sewn into her coat lining — taught her the old Persian pharmacopoeia: which roots cure fever, which flowers induce sleep, which berries stop a heart mid-beat. By fifteen, Vashti could identify two hundred plants by taste alone and compound tinctures that court physicians could not replicate with ten times her resources. The Wildwood Witches elevated her to Craftwitch for her gift — the rarest intuition for how substances combine, an almost supernatural sense for the moment a brew tips from medicine into magic. She lost that title the night she refused to poison a diplomat's wine at the Grove's command, arguing that her craft existed to heal, not to murder by stealth. They called it insubordination. She called it the oath every brewer takes when they first learn which plants kill. Now she keeps a laboratory in the Lodge's lower vaults, surrounded by bubbling alembics and jars of things that glow in the dark, brewing remedies for ailments that have no business existing — and occasionally, for the right price, compounding something considerably less therapeutic.
