The Hollow Court: 6 - Hollowhorn (Power Level 2)

Threnwen held the sixth rank of the Hollow Court not through power but through patience. She learned the Court's greatest skill — not the wearing of masks, but the forgetting of the face beneath. For four centuries she was exemplary. Then she was seen. Not unmasked — seen. A child in a market town looked at her directly, without fear, without glamour-blindness, and said you look like you miss someone. The Court heard of it within the hour. The problem was not the child. The problem was that Threnwen had not denied it.

She did not leave. They removed her. She arrived at The Lodge without explanation and offered none. She has been here longer than anyone can accurately account for. She repairs things — furniture, instruments, the small objects that accumulate in a place like this. Her hands are careful. She does not look in mirrors.

What the child saw has never been named. Threnwen does not appear to be searching for a name for it. She keeps it very still, in a place behind the sternum, and tends to it the way one tends to something that must not be disturbed.
