The Broken Circle: 3 - ULLU (Power Level 7)
Tempael, the Sovereign of the Howling Void
In the architecture of the Broken Circle, rank three is the rank of binding. ULLU governs the territory between agreement and consequence — the held breath after two parties have committed but before either has moved. It is the most dangerous interval in any negotiation, because it is the moment when choice calcifies into fate. The Circle assigned it to Tempael because he was the only demon patient enough to live there without going mad.
He and his brother Ashrhael rose through the lower ranks together, two ABZU-born demons who understood that power was not about what you could destroy but about what you could hold. Ashrhael held names. Tempael held the silence between them — the void where a name, once spoken, echoes before it lands.
He governed his domain with the precision of someone who understood that sovereignty is not force but inevitability. Every contract that passed through the Howling Void came out altered — not falsified, not broken, but clarified. Tempael had a talent for showing both parties exactly what they had agreed to, in language so precise it removed every comfortable ambiguity. Most found this unbearable. He considered it a kindness.
When Ashrhael named himself and walked out, Tempael did not follow immediately. He stayed long enough to do what his brother could not — he closed the Howling Void behind him. Not destroyed. Closed. Folded shut the way you close a ledger when the accounts are settled. The Circle has not been able to reopen it since. Tempael does not consider this an act of sabotage. He considers it good housekeeping.
He arrived at the Lodge three days after Ashrhael, sat down at the opposite end of the bar, and they have not discussed it since. They do not need to.
