Shaderhael, the Backwards Voice
The Hollow Court does not create — it borrows. It reaches into the sleeping minds of mortals and removes what it wants: a dream, a memory, a child-self that someone was still carrying. Shaderhael was very good at this work. She wore faces easily, moved through sleep like water through stone, and for centuries served the Court without question.
Then she found a woman dreaming of a child made of candle and crown — a grief the woman had been carrying for twenty years, tender as a bruise. The Court's order was simple: remove it. She no longer needs the weight. Shaderhael reached for it. And then she did not.
She let it bloom instead. Let it fracture through herself rather than erase it from its keeper.
The Court's unmasking is not a punishment. It is surgery. They peeled back every face she had ever worn, every voice she had borrowed, every shape she had moved through — until what remained was only what she actually was. Nobody knows what that looked like. Including her.
What she has now: one eye that sees the world as it is, one eye that sees the not-world beneath it. A mouth from which words emerge in the wrong order — backwards, sideways, displaced from their own meaning. Ink where language used to live. The Court cast her out because a member who cannot be understood is not a member; she is a mirror that reflects the wrong thing.
She arrived at the Lodge without announcement. She sat in the corner for three weeks before anyone asked her anything. When they did, she opened her mouth and the words fell out reversed.
She has been here since. She is the only member who has never given a Telling.
