The Broken Circle: 3 - NAM-TAR (Power Level 5)

Seraphine Voss, the Unwritten Name

Seraphine was a NAM-TAR of the Broken Circle, a scribe of fate whose stylus was a splinter of obsidian and whose ink was distilled from the silence between stars. Her function was to inscribe the true names of mortals onto the clay tablets of destiny, binding them to the paths designed by the higher ABZU. Her work was flawless, her calligraphy a thing of terrible beauty, each glyph laid down with the finality of a tombstone. The patterns that curl like smoke across her throat and shoulders are not tattoos, but the echoes of true names she has consumed, a library of fates etched upon her flesh. Her exile was not born of error, but of a perverse and meticulous craftsmanship.

She was found guilty of the sin of editorial discretion. When the name of a certain poet—a man whose verses held a fragile, defiant light that irritated the grand design—came across her tablet, Seraphine did not inscribe it. She absorbed it. She felt the shape of it on her tongue, the cadence of its potential, and found the pre-ordained fate attached to it—a mundane death by fever—to be artistically unsatisfactory. So, she rewrote it. With a surgeon's precision, she altered a single glyph in the surrounding causal weave, granting the poet a decade more of life, of creation, of beautiful, disruptive influence. It was a minor edit, a footnote. But a footnote can unravel an entire text.

Cast out, her own true name struck from the registers of the Circle, she was drawn to the Lodge by the scent of other unfinished stories. Here, she does not miss the grand design. She finds the chaos of exile far more interesting—a blank page, teeming with possibilities. She now collects the unwritten names of other exiles, studying them, not to bind, but to appreciate their irregular, wild, and wholly unauthorized shapes.
