The Veil: 4 - Drifter (Power Level 3)
Rosamund Fell was a British war correspondent in the last decade of her life — Sarajevo, Grozny, Mosul, finally Aleppo. In a basement clinic on the third night of the eastern offensive she sat with a Syrian artillery officer who had been brought in with no lower body and four hours of consciousness left. He gave her a sealed envelope addressed to his daughter in Hamburg and made her promise it would be hand-delivered. She promised. She put the envelope in the satchel that never left her shoulder. She walked out of the clinic at first light to file her dispatch and was killed by the second airstrike of the morning, in the street, with the satchel still on her. The envelope was found, identified, and quietly buried with her belongings by people who did not know what it was. The daughter was never told. Rosamund came up Veiled with the satchel still on her shoulder and the weight of the undelivered envelope still inside it. At the Lodge she keeps the unsaid and the undelivered for every member who comes to her. The satchel is bottomless now. She does not consider this a burden. She considers it a job she was already doing.
