Ostanna, the Last Hearth
She is the final practitioner of a Carpathian bone-reading tradition that died with her village. When the plague called sukhota swept through the mountain passes — not disease but a vampiric blight that drained the land itself, turning soil to powder and wells to dust — Ostanna's grandmother pushed her into the root cellar with a bird skull and a command: count the bones, girl, and do not open the door until you have named every death above you. She was thirteen. By the time she finished counting, she had named forty-seven. She opened the door to silence and grey earth. The Wildwood Witches found her three years later, living alone in the dead village, wearing her grandmother's hat and speaking to no one but the crows who brought her small bones to read. She has never named the village. She calls it the last hearth, and herself the ember that walked out of it. Her arm bears the marks of every reading she has done since — one cut per truth told, scored into skin that heals slower each time because she refuses to let the scars close cleanly. She reads death in bone the way others read futures in flame: not to prevent it, but to ensure the dead are named before they are forgotten.
