Nellie Cormorant was a ward cleaner on a maternity unit somewhere in North London when she went into labour at the end of her own shift in 2003. She was twenty-seven. A postpartum haemorrhage took her and the baby before the on-call registrar made it upstairs. The incident notes used the words unavoidable and catastrophic. Nellie has not, as far as she is concerned, entirely let him go. She carries a folded hospital blanket the length of a newborn and rocks it in the Lodge's kitchen corner. The Veiled know the blanket contains nothing the living can see. They are not certain it contains nothing at all. Nellie is calm, composed, affectionate. She will show the blanket to any member who asks. Most do not ask twice.
