The Veil: 6 - Whisperer (Power Level 4)
Margit Szell was a schoolteacher in a village east of Debrecen in the early 1920s. She witnessed, alone, an act so particular and so grievous that she could not afterwards name it aloud — not from shame, but because she understood at once that speaking it wrongly would do further harm to the one who had been harmed. She went home. She sat at her desk. She began to write an account, carefully, in Hungarian. Before she finished the first page her heart — which had not been well — gave out. No one read what she had begun. The half-finished page was found and, because it made no sense to those who read it, burned. At the Lodge Margit writes. She writes in Hungarian. She writes in German. She writes in Romanian. She writes in Latin. She writes in every language she once spoke, in turn, hoping one of them will hold the weight of what she saw. None of them does. The pages empty by morning. She does not mind. The writing is the rank.
