The wraith now called Ishmael Demour died in infancy in a small Anatolian village in the late Ottoman period, before the naming-ceremony that in his family tradition fixed a child's identity into the world. His parents had chosen a name; they never said it aloud at the door, because the child did not live to the seventh day when the saying was customary. What the name was, the family took to their own graves. The wraith was found in the Veil as a shape without a handle, adopted by other Veiled, and given a placeholder — Ismail for grace, Demir for iron, Lodge-names both. He has worn them for most of a century and looks now like the man he would have grown into. He keeps the Lodge's small library and reads every register, every ledger, every list of old names in any language he can access, searching for the one that was supposed to be his.
