CHARGHITH
She has not told anyone her age. She will not. The number is long enough that speaking it aloud would be an act of theatre she has no patience for. What she will say — what she has always been willing to say — is that the craft is a record. Every spell she has ever spoken, every working she has ever threaded through the world, is written somewhere on her skin. She did not put them there. They arrived. They have always arrived. She stopped questioning it sometime around the third century.
The tattoos are not decorative. They are not chosen. They appear as she sleeps, or mid-sentence, or sometimes — in the older ones — mid-breath, with a faint heat that she no longer notices. A new mark means a new working has completed. That is all she says about it.
What she does not say is the rest of it. That something guides the hand. That the symbols appear in no script she can trace to any tradition she has studied. That occasionally she wakes with phrases she doesn't remember casting, in inks she has no explanation for. She knows what it looks like. She has chosen not to name it. Some things survive longer when they go unnamed.
