The Broken Circle: 8 - DUB-SAR (Power Level 9)
Belveth has shed her form seventeen times. She knows this because she counted, once, and then stopped counting because the number made her children weep and she found their weeping tiresome.
Each shedding burns through what she was and releases what she is becoming. The gold that bleeds through her current skin is not decoration — it is power under pressure, the next version of her finding the gaps in the one she's wearing now. The scales at her throat are the oldest part of her, the part that has survived every transformation because it is too fundamental to shed. She has tried.
Her children exist. Several of them are old enough to be formidable in their own right. They cannot keep pace with her. Each time she transforms they are left standing in the version of their mother that no longer exists, reaching for a hand that has already changed shape. She does not slow down for them. She does not look back. She finds their attachment to previous versions of her both illogical and exhausting.
She reached ERSHETU. She stood at the threshold — the place where the Circle stops having ranks and starts having a direction. The Obsidian Throne was occupied. The one who sat on it was not ruling. He was not resisting. He had long since stopped being countable. The void had already begun. She could see it — not in him, but through the part of him that was no longer there.
She stepped back.
Not from weakness. From the only clarity seventeen transformations had ever produced: she knew, in that moment, what the throne actually was. Not completion. Not power crowned. An event horizon — the closest a shape can stand to nothing and still hold. She had spent every form she'd ever worn climbing toward that. She put it down.
Her children are still climbing. They are brilliant and hungry and wrong in exactly the way she was. She will not tell them what she saw. They would not believe her. And perhaps they deserve to find out for themselves.
The Lodge was the only place left that had a shape she could stand inside without it being a lie.
